Helpful Tips for Applications
APPLYING FOR A POSITION
If you are considering applying for a posted position, we encourage you to do the following:
* Study the job announcement and request (from HR) a copy of the Employee Work Profile (EWP) for the position. Make sure you understand the qualifications and knowledge, skills and abilities required/preferred for the position. * Apply on-line on the Virginia Jobs website located at http://jobs.virginia.gov. We encourage you to discuss the position and your career aspirations with your supervisor if you are comfortable doing so.
* Your application should be complete, accurate, and neat (use complete sentences, check spelling and grammar). It is your opportunity to make a first impression with a hiring manager/supervisor—just as a resume creates a first impression of a prospective external candidate. Because of limited space on the application (number of character spaces allowed), use shortened sentences and/or abbreviations as needed.
* Make sure your application is submitted by 12:00 midnight on the required closing date.
* Your application will be screened against the selection criteria for the position. Selection criteria include any specific requirements or qualifications necessary for the position (e.g. knowledge of a specific area or a specialized degree). Your application will also be screened against any preferred credentials for the position.
INTERVIEWING : Interviewing is an essential part of the selection process. If you have successfully screened in for an interview for the position, you will be notified by Human Resources. The interview will be with an interview panel of generally three to four managers/supervisors/professionals. Prepare for your interview with the panel as though you were interviewing outside of the Agency. Preparation for the interview is critical to your success. Be prepared to discuss your strengths and weaknesses and explain past experiences, qualifications, credentials and education which demonstrate your knowledge, skills and abilities, especially as they relate to the position for which you are interviewing. Listed below are some interviewing tips:
* If you are contacted for an interview, check with your supervisor before you accept an interview date/time. Your supervisor will need to know that you will be away from your office.
* Dress in professional business attire for the interview. A dress suit or slacks and a jacket are appropriate.
* Be on time for your interview and do not bring anyone with you.
* Be enthusiastic. Be the candidate who is seen as the best fit for the position.
* Be confident and relaxed during the interview. Project a positive, can-do professional demeanor.
* Maintain eye contact with panel members and smile during the interview. Be polite.
* Don’t assume that panel members know you and your current job performance.
* Refrain from drinking, eating, chewing gum, or using your cell phone during the interview.
* Answer interview questions honestly and directly.
* Speak clearly and precisely. The panel is looking for someone who is a good communicator.
* Watch your body language. Maintain good posture and refrain from nervous movements.
* Refrain from making derogatory remarks about current and/or former employers or colleagues.
* At the close of the interview, re-state your interest and thank the hiring manager and interviewing panel.
* After your interview, check the position status online in the Recruitment Management System (RMS).
* If you are not offered the position, evaluate what you have learned and try again for other opportunities! Ask your supervisor/manager what kinds of things you should do to continue to develop professionally.
